Oil pipeline giant Enbridge recently announced that it is temporarily shelving its Trailbreaker project, which would have brought tar sands oil into Quebec for the first time. The Trailbreaker project would bring 230,000 barrels a day of dirty tar sands oil from Alberta through Sarnia, Ontario to Montreal. Some of the oil would keep going to Portland, Maine to be loaded into tankers.

The tar sands are holding us all hostage in our desire to tackle global warming. They are the reason we do not have strong national laws clamping down on major carbon polluters. The pause on Trailbreaker gives Quebec an opportunity to promote alternatives to the tar sands and ambitious solutions to climate change.

When President Obama visits Canada, energy and the tar sands will be up for discussion. Use your voice to urge Premier Charest to oppose an energy pact that would leave the tar sands off the hook and place a greater burden on Quebec manufacturing industry. Canada needs to adopt a climate change strategy that applies equally to all sectors, including the tar sands.

Dear Premier Charest:

The temporary halt to Enbridge's Trailbreaker proposal means that Quebec will remain free from dirty oil for now.

However, I am deeply concerned about the prospect of Trailbreaker or other projects bringing tar sands oil into the province in the future.

The growth of greenhouse gas emissions from the tar sands is more than wiping out the gains that Quebecers are making in reducing their emissions.

I understand that Prime Minister Stephen Harper is persuing a North American Climate Strategy that would exempt the tar sands. I urge you to oppose such an initiative and instead demand a Climate Pact that would require equally stringent reductions in all sectors, including the tar sands.

Yours sincerely,
